Oftentimes when we face calamities, we question God, why me? Our questioning why supposes that someone else should have been the victim upon the belief that we are better than others in God’s sight. Mark 10: 18; Luke 18: 19 says no one is good but God alone. We are not better than anyone. Our feeling of importance is not scriptural but a delusion.
We consider ourselves better based on foolish pride. Philippians 2:3 says do nothing from selfishness or conceit, but in humility count others better than yourself. Anytime we ask, LORD WHY ME, we question God’s wisdom or decision. In our foolish pride, we commit the following errors:
We show ingratitude for God’s goodness
1 Timothy 4: 4-5 say for everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving; for then it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. The way we receive events determine the extent of our gratitude to God. If we accept God’s creation as good, we will receive everything with thanks. If we doubt God’s goodness, we will reject it and ask, WHY. In all circumstances, we must turn to God with a thankful heart for he knows what is good for us.
We misjudge God’s divine seasons
Ecclesiastes 3: 6 says for everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die. By God’s calendar, every event and circumstance has a season and they are bound to happen when the season comes. Only God in his infinite wisdom may vary his seasons so we must prepare for the seasons. No season is permanent. What we need to know is the answer to the question: how soon will our season come?
We misconstrue who we are
1 Corinthians 6: 19-20 says… you are not your own; you were bought with a price. As servants of the Most High God through Christ Jesus our Lord, we cannot decide for our Master. God is our master and he decides our circumstances. We cannot fault him in so far as we remain his servants so the whys must not arise.
Once we have been bought with the blood of Jesus, Romans 14: 8 says if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. In acknowledging this fact, Paul said in Philippians 1: 21, for me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. If we have any challenges, let us report it to the Master who is in charge rather than complaining.
We misjudge who God is
We often misjudge who is the cause of our challenges. Job reprimanded his wife saying in Job 2: 10, you speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this Job did not sin with his lips. According to Job, the same good God cannot be an evil God because evil has befallen us. Only the foolish hold a contrary view.
Job also said we sin with our lips when we question God, why. Job says we sin with our lips when we question God’s goodness. Job accepted God’s goodness in whatsoever state he was and so restrained his lips against God. He rather rebuked what was not scriptural from his wife to curse God and die. Have we spent time to know God? Or do we misjudge God? James 1:13 says… God tempts no one.
We underestimate the tongue
We underestimate the effect of our lips. Proverbs 18: 21 says death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. This is affirmed in 1 Peter 3: 10 saying for he that would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking guile. The tongue must be subject to the Holy Spirit. Matthew 12: 36-37 says… men will render account for every careless word they utter; for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.
Asking why I do not change God’s planned seasons. God expects us to speak with spiritual maturity. Ecclesiastes 10: 12 says the words of the wise man’s mouth win him favour, but the lips of a fool consume him. Who guards our lips and tongues?
We misjudge our status before God
Before we ask, WHY, we must first examine ourselves of our status before God. Ezra 8: 22 says the hand of our God is good upon all that seek him, and the power of his wrath is against all that forsake him. The final decision to intervene or not in our situation is at God’s pleasure. Psalms 73: 1 says truly God is good to the upright, to those who are pure in heart.
When God withdraws from us, Satan takes over from there. God is not accountable for evil but he may only permit it for a justifiable reason. When Satan decided to afflict Job, God said to Satan in Job 2: 6 behold, he is in your power, only spare his life. God knew Job would pass the test so he allowed Satan to afflict him. Can God count on us to overcome our trials without saying why me?
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus Christ, in times of adversities remind us of your goodness to us so we may not complain. Please guard our lips away from foolish talk which could destroy us. Open our eyes to behold your seasons so we may be ready when they come. Cleanse our hearts to receive you as we ought to and save our souls today in your holy name, Amen!!
