We want to continue under God’s direction to dilate on one of the most misapplied and misinterpreted biblical verses recorded in 1 Chronicles 6:22 as well as Psalms 105:15 which states that touch not my anointed ones, do my prophets no harm. To be God’s anointed, one has to be chosen or called by God and preserved for the mission that God has for him or her.
To recap, God made this pronouncement based on Abraham’s faithfulness to him. As a reward to his generations, God swore to protect them from all aggressions in their promises and called Canaan because they were weak, wanderers and sojourners without an inheritance. God’s anointing was by oil to represent cleansing and spiritual protection. God’s anointing was not limited to priesthood nor was it to cover bad conduct as bad conduct. Bad conduct includes using God’s name in vain or desecrating God’s name, honour and glory because of our unapproved lives of sin.
The character for God’s anointed
It was a religious ritual during which God confirmed his chosen to the people and his prophets and for what purpose the person to be anointed had been chosen. God’s choice and purpose of anointing was always specific in order to serve as a true and clear guide to the anointed. Our God is not a God of confusion but order. 1 Corinthians 14:33 says that, for God is not a God of confusion but of peace. It was an enviable responsibility to stand in the stead of God himself to satisfy the needs of God’s people through faithfulness to God. It was an honour that could normally not be rejected or refused.
Wolves among God’s anointed
There were and still also self-appointed people who call themselves God’s anointed. There is counterfeit by Satan for every good deed of God. 2 Corinthians 11:14 says no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Matthew 7:15 says beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. Jesus also said in Matthew 10:16 that behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
Jesus meant we should be smart to identify and avoid the wolves amongst us with wisdom yet without offending or hurting them because we need their souls in the vineyard of Christ Jesus. Luke 10:3 quotes Jesus as saying, go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. These wolves have infiltrated the house and the congregation of God with intention to devour the weaklings among us. It is our duty to protect the weaker ones from being devoured. These are not God’s anointed but wolves.
Paul had observed the presence of the wolves among God’s people so he said in Acts 20:29-31 that I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciple after them. Therefore be alert. An example of self-elevated persons in the bible is Abimelech which is recorded in Judges 9. Other examples are Simon the magician who wanted to obtain the Holy Spirit with money, Acts 8:18-24; and the Jewish false prophet named BarJesus, Acts 13:6.
Self-acclaimed God’s anointed
In these days of greed and deception as of old, Satan uses many to claim that they are God’s anointed sometimes without knowing the implications and consequences of their claim to that title. The motives include purely or primarily business motives; wealth and cash motives; sexual pervasiveness; motives for distortion and spiritual disorientation; desperation for a profession; teaching demonic ideology or strange doctrines and philosophy; and generally operating as agents of dark and hostile spirits.
This is why Paul as well as Jesus Christ have warned us to be weary of or be alert. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12:10 that we should examine or test all spirits. These wolves resort to miracles to deceive us upon knowledge that that is what we prefer rather than reading and meditating on the word of God and waiting for the true divine anointing upon our lives. 1 John 2:27 says God’s anointing upon our lives shall teach us everything. Do we allow the Holy Spirit to teach us with the truth of Christ Jesus?
Paul’s recommendation
Paul suggested a solution by the Holy Spirit in Romans 15:1 that ye who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please yourselves; let each of you please his neighbor for his good, to edify him. In other words we are enjoined to bear up the weaker ones in love and prayer and by doing so we remain faithful to God’s commandment to love God and our fellow men as ourselves.
Paul says in Colossians 3:17 that and whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. God’s anointed do the right things as if they are doing it for the Lord. Where do we stand on the scale of faithfulness to Christ Jesus? With a self-appointed title as God’s anointed, we must be careful not to wail and mourn and gnash our teeth when the trumpet of God sounds with Christ and his angels appearing in the sky, Matthew 13:50; Luke 13:28.
Let us be and remain truly God’s anointed in whom God delights and God will fight for us in strongholds of battle beyond our strength and imagination. Self-arrogated titles are not recognized by God.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, teach me the rudiments of faithfulness that I may stand in the gap for blessings upon generations after me as Abraham was to his people. In your holy name we pray, Amen!!
