Tomorrow is not guaranteed. Each day also differs from the other. The events, complexities and challenges may differ from today. Our lives, encounters, and hopes may differ from the days past or present. Nothing remains the same, not even change which is alleged to be constant. Change may or may not happen because we are not in charge of change.
The magnitude and direction of events may vary under different circumstances even affecting the same person or situation. Nature may appear pleasant today, but will end one day. The sun may rise and set today, but may cease tomorrow. Death or birth may occur today, but not tomorrow as it was today. There is an end to what we think is guaranteed. No one knows what will change or may not change. We can only speculate or surmise.
What will not change tomorrow?
Only God, Christ Jesus, and his word are the exceptions. Regarding God, Revelation 1: 8 says I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. (Read also Revelation 1: 4; 4: 8).
Referring to Christ Jesus, we read from Hebrews 13: 8 that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. In John 8: 58 Jesus said to them, truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham, I am. For God’s word, Jesus said in Matthew 24: 35; Mark 13: 31; Luke 21: 33 heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
What may change tomorrow?
The rules of tomorrow are made by only God. Jesus said in Matthew 6: 34 therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day’s own trouble be sufficient for the day. Tomorrow has its own rules and we cannot change them without Christ Jesus through whom we pray to the Lord God Almighty for his grace, mercy and love.
No one knows the rules or events of tomorrow with absolute certainty but the Father. One such unknown event is the day of the hour of Jesus’ return. Jesus said in Matthew 24: 36; Mark 13: 32 but for that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. Such lack of knowledge should make us vigilant rather than reckless as we find ourselves busy engaged in.
We are cautioned in James 4: 13-15 come now, you who say, today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and get gain; whereas you do not know about tomorrow. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, if the Lord wills, we shall live and we shall do this or that. We recklessly assume we have control over our lives whereas we are just pitiful at God’s mercy.
How to expect tomorrow
It is written in Matthew 24: 43; Luke 12: 39; but know this, that if the householder had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have watched and would not have let his house be broken into. We must be wise to prepare spiritually for the unknown tomorrow. Thieves do not usually give notice of their robbery. Jesus has given us notice of tomorrow’s likely event though without further particulars. It is for us to be on guard every moment and to be watchful in prayer.
People’s assurances or predictions of events, however calculated, may fail because they are all based on assumptions. Only God knows. We read from 1 Thessalonians 5: 2-4 for you yourselves know that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When people say there is peace and security, the sudden destruction will come upon them as travail comes upon a woman with child, and there will be no escape. But you are not in darkness, brethren, for that day to surprise you like a thief. We must expect tomorrow in righteousness through Christ Jesus with vigilance.
Tomorrow’s great expectation
We are expecting the return of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ any moment soon. We could also be called home tomorrow. Are we ready for the journey to meet the Lord tomorrow? The trumpet may be our home call or sound of Jesus’ coming. We read from 2 Peter 3:10 but the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will dissolve with fire, and the earth and the works that are upon it will be burned up.
The bible says in 1 Thessalonians 4: 15-17 for we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words. Are we prepared to face tomorrow?
Are we ready for tomorrow?
In today’s world, we refuse to give heed to God’s word. We may face the consequences of our actions and inactions in hell fire prepared for the devil and his agents. It is written in Revelation 3: 3 remember then what you received and heard; keep that, and repent. If you will not awake, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come upon you.
We further read from Revelation 16: 15 “Lo, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is he who is awake, keeping his garments that he may not go naked and seen exposed!” Any event could happen tomorrow because it is God who decides on the events of tomorrow. In Daniel 2: 21 he (God) changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; he reveals deep and mysterious things; he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him. Are we ready to face tomorrow if it ever comes as a day of home call?
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, tomorrow is not certain except your word which shall prevail. Prepare us to be vigilant in righteousness in expectation of your second coming or our encounter with you when you call us home. Let any event we may encounter tomorrow strengthen our faithfulness to you. Overshadow us with your grace for tomorrow in your holy name, Amen!!
