Our possession simply means what belongs to us either by inheritance or by any legitimate means. God out of his infinite love has given each and every one of us some possessions. They are material, spiritual or both for our needs.

In Genesis 17:8 God said to Abraham, I will give to you and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. Paul confirms in Philippians 4:19 that my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. In the event that we think our possession is inadequate, this is God’s assurance to replenish our possession be it material, spiritual or any other.

Source of derailment

We are however sometimes unable to take or retain possession of what God has endowed us because of the battles of life that we encounter, sometimes not visible to the naked eye. Ephesians 6:12 says that we contend not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers and rulers of darkness and spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

We also fail to take or retain possession because of our love for materialism or greed which leads us to sin and death and permanent deprivation and denial of God given and blessed possession. In John 10:10, Jesus said the thief cometh not, but to steal, and to kill, and to destroy but he comes that we might have life, and have it more abundantly. Possession is life so Jesus said in Matthew 6:10-21 that where your treasure is, there your will heart be also. Only Jesus can protect and preserve our possession.

We further fail in taking and retaining possession because we fail to accept God as our God beyond lip service. In Genesis 17:8 God made it a condition to Abraham and his descendants after him that their possession shall be everlasting and he will be their God. When we take God out of the equation, we lose possession of anything good in the sight of God the giver of the same possession. It is unquestionable that we have all derailed yet it is not too late to repossess our possession if we would come back to Christ Jesus and his word of life.

Provision for containment

God who knows our challenges more than we can ever know of ourselves therefore made provision to address these and any challenges to our possession. That provision is called God’s grace. Paul referring to Christ Jesus says in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 that my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. It takes God’s grace to save and to preserve our possessions.

God’s grace is only available through Jesus Christ. If we have Jesus, then as Paul says in Corinthians, he will not worry about any challenges because the power of Christ will rest upon him and he shall be strong. Our greatest possession is our lives so Jesus said in Matthew 16:26 that what shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul or what shall a man give in return for his life?

In the area of materialism, Proverbs 24:1 says that be not envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them; for their minds devise violence, and their lips talk of mischief. One who desires material gain will stop at nothing even if the path to wealth is evil or unconscionable because the heart is sealed by sin. Proverbs 24:19-20 and Psalms 37:1 also say fret not yourself because of evildoers, and be not envious of the wicked; for the evil man has no future; the lamp of the wicked will be put out.

Are we ready to go by God’s instructions in order to take back our possessions which God has given to us? If so, kindly join us as we pray in the blessed name of our Lord and Saviour Christ Jesus.

Prayer

Our Father in heaven, in our desire to reclaim our possession through Christ Jesus, please heal us of what derails us and grant us the grace through Christ Jesus to overcome our challenges by your word. Thank you in Christ Jesus, Amen!!
