The name of Jesus Christ was given by God. It is written in Matthew 1:21 that she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. Jesus’ name is descriptive of his nature and persona. His name therefore carried authority and power from heaven even prior to his birth.

The other name called Christ was also from heaven. Jesus asked Simon Peter that who do you say that I am and he replied, you are the Christ, the son of the living God. Jesus answered him that blessed are you, Simon Bar Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven, Matthew 16:16-17

Both names of Jesus Christ are from heaven and given for a purpose. Reading both names together they mean the son of the living God who will save his people from their sins. It is only Jesus Christ who knows the root cause of sin and knows how to root it out however it is manifested be it spiritual bondage or affliction or any other. Will we allow Jesus to execute his ordained mandate in our lives?

Purpose of a name

God changed Abram’s name to Abraham for a purpose. God said in Genesis 17:5 that no longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. Soul also became Paul after his encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus to persecute the Church. Jesus said in Acts 9:15-16 that he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel; for I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name. These people lived up to God’s expectation in the names they had. What about us?

What are our names and what do they stand for? Are we living to the glory of God? If God gave the name Jesus Christ to his only begotten son in whom he is well pleased and further directed that we should listen to him, then we must take Jesus seriously for it is only by obedience to him that he will save us. What is in the name of Jesus Christ?

Saving power

The name of Jesus Christ has the power to save. Matthew 1:21 says you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. John 3:17 says for God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Acts 2:21 also says it shall be that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Romans 10:9 says if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Call upon the name of Jesus Christ now that there is time. What is your state in eternity? Jesus can save you now. Call on him without any more delay or hesitation for your soul is precious to him. Repent and in faith receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior. Ask him to wash you in his cleansing blood and you shall be whole and will qualify for eternal life.

Name above every name

The name of Jesus is above every name and every tongue. Philippians 2:9-11 say that therefore God has exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. In times of trouble, joy, physical or spiritual challenges, emptiness, loneliness, family home or vocational challenges, etc. what name do you call for rescue?

Unlocks God’s heart

The name of Jesus softens God’s heart to hear us in our despair. Jesus said in John 14:13-14 that whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son; if you ask anything in my name, I will do it. Call upon the name of Jesus Christ with all your burdens, leave them at his feet and consider them solved. His name is our inheritance and our surest asset and weapon in battle. What is the nature of your battle? Do not give up on the name of Jesus Christ.

Performs miracles

The name of Jesus performs miracles and for greater works. John  14:12 says that truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father. Do we want to experience miracles in your life or situation? Pray to God in the name of Jesus and expect a miracle for you will overcome your situation and will leap above all challenges? The name of Jesus is the answer, do not waste it. It is too precious and potent. Distance no barrier to miracles and God’s intervention through Jesus Christ.

Access for all who believe

The name of Jesus is available to all today who believe and are dedicated to his service and desire to appropriate it to glorify God provided you invoke it with a clean heart of purity and righteousness as the disciples did. Luke 5:32 says that I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. Acts 16:31 says that believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household. Let us think about our families if not for ourselves, and save them from eternal death with the name of Jesus.
